Since Geocities decided to close shop, I must move my fanfic. This Dreamwidth account is used as an archive for my fic, and there will be no non-fic posts. However, I have imported the old LiveJournal entries from "Making Shapely Fiction," a book on writing.

The fanfic entires are not chronological, but each makes note of the original online publish date.

These are my Lord of the Rings stories. I hope you enjoy them.

The Prodigal Took
Summary: Pippin rides to Tuckborough to raise a small army of Tooks for the Battle of Bywater.
Rating: PG for adult themes
Notes: Inspired from a passage in Return of the King: Pippin rode off with half a dozen lads on ponies. 'See you soon!" he cried. 'It's only fourteen miles or so over the fields. I'll bring you back an army of Tooks in the morning.' A MEFA award nominee.

Note: "The Battle of Bywater" was Runner-up for the Mithril Voters' Choice Award in the catagory Best Drama / Action Adventure. It also was a Mithril Award Finalist.

Notes: Nestra gave support during my search for a title. Edgar Allan Poe supplied it. Every Separate Dying Ember was a Mithril Award Finalist in 2005.

Unclean
Summary: "Just give me an enemy I can fight," Boromir demanded.
Notes: Per request: "Aragorn/Boromir. Hot sweaty sex under a bush. Both parties annoyed and frustrated. How about a fic in which they CAN'T find a stream to bathe in. Just to change the fanon convention of a pool of water everywhere. And the fic must involve a salami. The Beef Jerky of the Elves." There are one or two lines of dialogue from the book.

The last entry. I've made it all the way to zigzag.

I'd started typing and posting these terms because I couldn't write; I'd hoped revisiting them would help jump-start some inspiration. I can't say it was unsuccessful (I have managed to write a bit, though little related directly to hobbits), but my productivity remains less than it was. Hrm, I'll have to brainstorm other ways to get my mojo back.

I am very pleased, however, that it seems some of you have found the excerpts from Stern's book helpful.

"By putting your story up for discussion you learn how to listen to criticism and how to deal with it. By hearing the reactions to other stories you begin to recognize who in the workshop is perceptive, judicious, and balanced in judgment. Probably you should pay attention to those persons when your story is discussed. You recognize that the opinions of some people should be discounted. Some are negative bullies and others are uncritical enthusiasts. A person may vehemently attack some aspect of a story that isn't worth more than a minute of discussion because it could be cleared up with the insertion of a single sentence. Someone else may wax rhapsodic about what you recognize as contrived and dishonest. What if that person loves your story?"

Ha! Fanfiction in a nutshell! But I say so in all seriousness: this is what I see happen to fanfic writers. It's a large part of my experience as a fanfic writer. Stern speaks only of how the workshop process affects writing; what he doesn't explore (but happens) includes the friendships made (or ended), the thrilling energy generated when creative minds click -- and, in fandom, the never-ending wank.
